Hell yeah. Secondly, this book gets better every time you read it. It's kind of like when you re-watch The Sixth Sense for the first time, you started actually noticing those little hidden Easter eggs, all those things you glossed over. As always, do not rob yourself the joy of reading or listening to this book. Speaking of listening, Shiloh James as our Jessica and Devin Ryder as our Kane did absolutely phenomenal jobs in this audiobook. So good. So into the deep, spoilers ahead. So first off, we meet Jessica. She's a tomboy from the poor side of the tracks, right? I know tomboy, I was like, Madison, I'm a tomboy. But I hate like hearing it, like, or like reading it, because I'm like, oh, jeans are just so comfy. Um, her pops is a drunk, she's got her older brother Chris living with her, her baby sister Summer, and her mom is sick in hospice care.

Just as she's stuffing her bag with her goodies, she gets caught by Kane Ravencourt. Which, okay. First things first, Ravencourt.

So Jessica is she lives in Bleakmoor. It's a town divided between the rich, aka the founding families, and their mansions, and then everyone else with their crumbling shithole buildings. Her and her friends are at school. She's got her bestie Rain and her sister Summer. She goes to the bathroom, and just as she's about to leave, Kane walks in, he backs her into the bathroom stall, and oh Scooby. Uh the mask didn't help. He figured out who the fuck you were. Idiot. Idiot. And Kane tells Jessica that she made a mistake piquing his interest. So it's best not to fight it. And he has a race tonight and he expects her to be there.

And his little sisters are playing in the pool. They're all chatting about the street race that's going down tonight and how some north side loser challenged them to a race. Hint, hint. Hint hint hint. Yes, it is. Her mom is pa his mom is painting, and she's been self-harming again. She's got a bandage, it's bleeding through. She ain't happy.

Yeah. But because kind of as, and again, we just like gloss over this, but you do see like there is some darkness that's going on. It's not, it's all not all just diving into pools of coins. There's some some bad shit happening in their lives. Yeah, he got real problems, okay? He's got real problems. Dad comes through and he gives him a job. It's someone that he needs to take care of. He also mentions that the senator was very happy with their last dinner. And at this comment, like Kane flinches. He's like, okay, I I gotta get the fuck out of here. He goes to a street race. Cash, the twin, is racing someone from the north side. He wins, Obi, and now it's Kane's turn to race.

Which street racing as like a subplot in a book is not something that I ever thought that I would be into. I know. I really enjoy it in the so far.

So do I. Honestly, like because it is like a pretty big like subplot throughout these books. Huge. Yeah. And honestly, I just love it. And and again, same thing. It is not something I don't think that I've ever encountered it before. If I have, not enough to like leave a lasting impression. Well, but in these ones, I love it.

Yeah, because it gives me like I don't know, it's like almost like something to take my mind off of like the horrible shit in the actual plot where I'm like, oh yeah, they're just gonna go raise some cause.

Like we're just in the wrong place. So it's race day. It's me, Jessica. She's there. She may have dressed up for Kane. And there's some stranger groping, Jessica. Kane rolls up and he's like, yo, guy, uh, take your hands off the fucking merchandise. The guy's like, eh, whatever, she's just some north side hoe. And so he just like grabs his wrists and just fucking breaks them because he didn't listen. Break the wrist and walk away. Break the wrist and walk away.

They have raced Bugattis against like airplanes before. Why are you racing that car? Just be like, my bad, bro. Let me can I just get my money real quick? I uh my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I'm sorry. Like, just just turn it down. So the race starts. Obviously, Kane wins. Obviously. And after the race, he just drives away. He agrees to her that her brother can't afford to lose the money, so he ain't gonna take the money from him, but she stole an orgasm from him. So it's only fair that he returns the favor. So they play a game of if I catch you, I gonna fuck you. Which his is called If I catch you, you're gonna be swee. But you know, you get the rules. You've played it before.

Turns out the society don't care who the fuck you are, and everyone is expendable.

We also get a little bit of a past on the twins here and learn that in the society when the boys turned, what, 10? Yeah. Uh they're sent away to learn how to survive and to kill, which are very important lessons for a 10-year-old. Yeah. Like semi-regular basis. These guys probably were with all the shit that they were going through. Right? Like 10. Okay. Real quick sidebar. Yeah. He's 6'4, but he pisses his pants. He pisses the bed.

Like, I really, so this is a trilogy, and they're all novellas, so they are on the shorter side, but she is definitely leaving the door open with like some of these friends I'm very interested in. Like Maverick, there's like a little thing going on with her friend, like Rain, and like some of the brother's friends. Like, there, there are a lot of stories and a lot of interesting personalities around that I really want to see some more of. And I would kind of like it if the brother turns out to be a bad guy. So I kind of hope we do regret it. Well, like, tell me why we gonna regret it, girl. We might, we might, right? I don't know yet. Anyway, so later that day, she's at home. She's ignoring Kane's messages as always, ain't got time. And she decides to do some self-exploration. And just as she moans his name, he whispers in her ear. Cause he broke into her room. And I don't know what this is called, but I decided that this is called favorite show.

But in my books, I really like it. Um Kane tells her that his family owns this town and everyone in it. So that means that he owns her. Which, like, oh, okay. Oh, really? You're lucky that you're 6'4 because otherwise I would not be as into this as I am. But uh thankfully we don't have to worry about that. That's true. Okay. We get to the last chapter in the book. Okay. Yeah. So you're reading this book, it's going good. We're having a good time. We've got some racing. The mum's in the hospital. I don't know. Jessica's life is kind of shit from a butt, but it's an interesting story. It's good. Whatever.

It would be like if you're talking to the lady at the grocery store, and instead of giving you your change, just like punches you in the face, and you're like, whoa. That was not the normal whoa. Like, you know, because when you're reading a book, obviously you you see how many chapters you have left. You're like, oh my god, I'm getting close to the end. You're like, oh, I have one chapter left. Okay, well, nothing like super crazy happened. Yeah. You know, and at first I also didn't realize that this was not done. I thought that it was just gonna be like, and now we're married. Like that it was just that that was it. Okay. The twins arrive at the dad's mansion for dinner. The senator and his wife are there. And they force the twins to do things that they don't want to. Things that they have been doing and has been happening to the twins since they were 14 years old. Sexual things. Bad things. Bad sexual things. And Cain doesn't want to. He tells his dad, he's like, no, I'm done. Like, I don't want to fucking do this anymore. Like, you've been essentially like, we've been getting raped by these people and assaulted, and I don't want to. And it's also like, this is why his twin brother Cash has been like doing drugs and like drowning out, like basically drowning out this part of his life. And he's like, No, I'm done. And the dad's like, Okay, yeah, that's cool, but just so you know, like I I will kill your mom, which obviously this makes sense. Why the mom it has been self-harming and is like not feeling well. And your little Jessica, I know about her too, and I'll fucking kill her. Please don't my Jessica! Not Jessica. So Kane unbuttons his pants and does what the senator and his wife ask. Shook it.

This book gave me some feelings, bad ones, but it also was very like edge of darkness vibes. Yes. Um, but I did love that it was super fun and quick to read, but I was so thrown off by this ending. Oh my god.

Like screaming into the void. Especially because so I don't really dabble in a lot of novellas. Like I definitely have after this book, I was like, oh, I have been sleeping on a lot of things. Because I always just kind of with the novella, I was like, you know, what are we talking? Like 200 pages max. You know, I was like, we're missing story, we're missing plot, we're missing, you know. But I find that if you get the right novella, and this one is the right novella, it is just chalked full of plot. There is so much stuff going on. You just don't have to wait 400 pages for it to happen. It all happens in 200 pages, like and it fucking slaps you in the face. Like oh, yeah.

It it honestly, it is absolutely fantastic, honestly. Like they're chef's guess, 10 out 10. It yeah, honestly, can't uh can't say enough about it. It's it's so freaking good. These are books that we have read more than once because it's really hard to tell 100% if you're gonna like a book the whole way through. You know, sometimes I think that's why I try not to recommend books until I'm done. Because I've had books that as soon as I recommend them to you, then I read the next chapter and I am instantly filled with regret because I did not know what I was talking about. I was not gonna enjoy that book as much as I freaking thought. Thanks. Um, most of these books are all actually all of these books are multiple reads for us so that we know when we're talking about this, we thoroughly like this book.
