Specifically, Scythe and Sparrow. Really quick recap. We have book one, Butcher and Blackbird, two serial killers, Sloan, Sutherland, the Orb Weaver, and Rowan Kane, he's the Butcher of Boston. They're competing in a yearly game of murder to find out who's the better killer, and they end up murdering those feelings and fall in love.

They hate each other, but they need to get married to save the ones they love. And during all that saving, they end up falling in love. Yes, they do. So all caught up. I gotta say that this is an interconnected standalone, but this book feels like Bryn's love letter to the readers. So do yourself a favor, read this entire series. Okay, now the warnings are out there. We are gonna spoil shit. Let's get into Scythe and Sparrow. So this book starts off before BB and Leather and Lark. We have Dr. Fionn Kane. He is the youngest and sweetest of the Kane brothers living out in Nebraska after running away from a broken heart in Boston. Yep. And then we've got uh the circus tarot reader, motorcycle stunt woman, all-around badass woman, Rose Evans, who also might partake in some nightly slashy activities.

Yeah. And we start the book out. Rose is reading tarot cards at the circus. She's in her little tent. She's doing a reading for this woman whose husband's like the biggest dirtbag piece of shit you've ever met. And she knows that this is like an abused woman. And this shitbed, shithead piece of garbage, old man, diaper wearing husband, comes in and like drags her out.

Takes the frickin' money right off the table, like robs Rose. And so she goes up to like the magician's apprentice and is like, go get my money back from that guy and get that guy's fucking ID, and uh I'll give it to you and like give it to me in exchange for I'll get you all the ingredients for pina coladas.

Hell yeah. Rose goes to this woman's house after the circus. She goes, she's getting her groceries, pina colada ingredients, but she stops at this woman's house and sees that this shitty husband is outside, so she hits him with a baseball bat, but it doesn't go well. He gets the jump on her and he beats the fuck out of her. She is fighting for her life and she's like scrambling to get away in a true brain fashion. She just stabs the guy in the eye with cocktail sticks. Right? Like the skewers that you'd put in your drink. Disgusting.

I think picture it as being those ones that like the little plastic ones that look like a little sword.

Yeah, I thought they were all like the umbrella ones.

So they'd like all just have like there's just like 14 umbrellas sticking out of his eye socket. Yeah, just horrible. And so he beat the shit out of her. Thankfully, she's able to like kind of pull herself away. She's got bones sticking out of her body.

And it's not even like she doesn't even like hobble to a car. She gets on a motorcycle. Yeah.

Yeah, just rip away. You're not getting very far. And so then we kind of flash over to Dr. Fioncain. He's out for a run, he's healthy, he's in shape, and he gets a notification that there's someone has like broken into his clinic and he rushes over there. He assumes it's somebody else, which we'll get to. Um, and it is Rose. She's all bloodied up and she needs help. And he takes her to the hospital, he gets her there, and he's like chatting with another like doctor, and she mentions a patient that came in with an eye injury. She had all these like cocktail sticks stuck in his eye. And weird he like kind of puts it together that it's this guy and that they were kind of like around each other because he's got like the cocktail like umbrellas in his eye, and she smells like pina colada, and he like goes through her belongings and she has the guy's ID in her pocket, and for whatever reason he doesn't turn her in.

He's like he just like puts two and two together and he's like, you know what I think should happen next. You should uh you should move in with me.

So her injury is bad, the bones were out of her body. Yeah, she's not gonna be a stunt woman with the circus, and the show must go on.

And she lives in a trailer, she lives named Dorothy.

Yeah. So they like the her circus friends just kind of like drop her trailer off at this campground on the edge of town, and they're like, Bye, we gotta go. When you're better, when you're better, like you can come back, but like for now, yeah. It's not goodbye. It's I'll see you later.

But Fionn comes by and he's like, I've got your motorcycle. You left it on my property. Could you just take this? But he's like, and he's like, you know, obviously you can't get in and out of your trailer. You've got like the most fucked up leg. Just come to my house. I'll take I'll take real good care of you. Um, I'm a doctor. I'll brush your hair real pretty. Like the guy that you stabbed in the eye and busted your shit up. Yeah, he lives just. So maybe you should just come to my house because I'll protect you.

And like, girl, he's a hot Irish doctor. Yeah. Like, why are you fighting it? So I would be there without being invited.

Yeah. Like that's how relationships work. And she's just super awkward and really weird. And like you can tell that she's like kind of uncomfortable, but doesn't know how to change that about his. He's a normal person. And he is like a professional. Yeah. He's a doctor. He like has to have these like tough conversations with people all the time for a living. And they're just so polar opposite, but it works so well.

I love it so much because it's what each of them need to be perfect themselves. Um, and so she like moves into his house and she's like, hey, you know, I gotta have like you're essentially letting a criminal live in your house, just so you know. I stabbed a man in the eye with cocktail umbrellas. Like, I just want you to know. And she ends up like telling him, like, this is what happened. And Fionn like sees red. And you know, it's like funny, because if this happened to me and someone had this conversation with me, I'd be like, Yeah, I don't know what you thought. Like, fuck around and find out. When you hit someone with a bat, there's always a chance they could hit you with this bat.

And we find out like he was a cop, but he was let go for like doing naughty naughty stuff. We find out where he lives. We find out like that he's had these complaints against him, and Fionn's like, you know what? I'm gonna take justice into my own hands. And he goes to his house and he's like, the guy's out there, he's like working on the barn, whatever. And Fionn picks up like a wrench and is gonna beat this man with it. And his son like runs out and he's like, Wow, maybe I shouldn't like murder this guy in front of his child. Yeah. He's like, That's nice of him. I'll just wander off.

And just like slowly backs away into the bushes, pulls a homer service out of there.

She's like, Ooh, my bad. That almost got real crazy. And he kind of like thinks in his head, he's like, I became a doctor to write some wrongs. Like, ooh, Batman origin story.

Fionn has daddy issues. Yeah. Because when he was thinking about killing Cranwell, he it was because it reminded him of his dad. Yeah. And I just this is something that I think about a lot when I when I read this book again. Could you imagine having the Kane brothers in your life in any capacity at all? The resources that you'd have access to, nobody would ever even be able to like look at you the wrong way again because you have one of them that's like a serial killer. You have another one that's a contract killer slash cleaner.

Um, so then, okay, we kind of like fast forward. She has like, I've never broken anything, so I don't understand how this stuff works.

This is probably one of the most inconsistent things about this book. There's no way you're getting in an accident to the point that your bone is sticking out of your leg and you're just like, no, let me just go for a little hobble.

They like team, like she loses one cast and then gains a new cast. I don't understand the system of casts. This is not within my wheelhouse. This is why I'm not someone's first call. But uh, Rose is now well enough to like hobble around. She's got crutches, she's around town, and she overhears this asshole, Eric, giving the fucking biz to his girlfriend on the phone. And the girlfriend is like one of the nurses that she met at the hospital when she was gonna be.

Yeah, and was like basically the tarot reading kind of like told her, like, yo, I know your boyfriend treats you like shit. Like, this guy sucks. You should like for the show. You should let me kill him. You should let me kill him for it. I would love to help you with this problem. Yes, let me kill him. Just let the sparrow take care of it, okay? The guy's like total douchebag. Like he catches like Rose looking at him and he's like, Hey, baby, you ready to potty? And we can hear him like kind of giving the shit to his girlfriend.

And he straight up calls her Naomi over the phone. A fucking you're a stupid fucking idiot, and then is threatening to share her naked photos. Yes. Why are you calling me on the phone? And so she's like, you know what? I always say I'm gonna do something. Let me just do something. So she fucking dolphin jumps into the back of his fucking truck, like just tosses one crutch. And just hides in the back of his truck, pulls this dirty blanket, and is like, I feel like this is fine. And like, holy fuck is she gutsy. I I dare you to break into someone unsuspecting person's vehicle. Yeah, with a broken leg that I'm like just freshly murder the person, but I would love for you to tell me the story of you breaking into someone's car and how awkward, like, how are you controlling your breathing? You're when you like play hide and go seek and you're like giggling. How are you just laying in the back with a fucking big ass knife being like, I'm sure this will work out fine?

So she's puked all over as a person. She's puked all over the inside of the truck. Everything is covered in blood. This guy's not dead yet, but he's bleeding out. There's like a super steep bank and then like a cliff into like a river, and she's like, Okay, perfect. I'm just gonna hop out, I'll start throwing my shit out. She's tossing her crutches out of the window, and she's gonna just hop on out. She's like, Gotta run. And then the truck slows down and stops before the drop. And he's just like slumped over. And she's like, and there's still all of her DNA in the vehicle with a dead guy with his throat pretty much.

And she's like, um, she calls up Fionn and is like, hey, I require assistance.

Send you a pin. I'm not able to do stuff. And he shows up and he's like, so what the fuck? Like you killed somebody, hey? And she's like, Yeah, you said like if I was in trouble. And he's like, I don't know. I thought you meant like a ride or something. Like, I didn't mean like body disposal. And she's like, Well, come on, like, just have a beer, like, we're good.

I'm back to my own. And he like, when they get back to the house, he's like snooping through like Rose's room, and she's got like all these beautiful plants in it, and it's like well loved, and he's like kind of reading through this like cards and stuff like that, and it's from all of these women that are like calling her the sparrow, and he's like kind starts to kind of realize, like, okay, like she might be murdering people, but like maybe they fucking deserved it, and she's also been like helping people, yeah. Well, she's been murdered, she murders because she cares. She murders because she cares. She murders because she cares. And then we're kind of like we hear a little bit of like Fion's backstory. He's like talking about this chick Claire, which, if you remember, she was the bitch who broke his heart and the one who almost got her face cut the fuck up by Lark for making little laffy-laffy dresses. For making a move on Lachlan, yeah, and basically he had like proposed to her. This was kind of like why he ran away from Boston. He proposed to her and she turned him down.

And it's like, oh, Larry brought me. Oh, I'm here to watch Bill's fight. Oh, I'm here to and she knows like where they live, who they are, who they're dating. And he's like, You've been here for like a minute and a half. Yeah, like three weeks.

He goes to visit Rose, he gets there and he fucking looks over and there's that goddamn raccoon with her, and he's like, uh, Barbara's here? Like, what's going on? It's like, yeah. When I was leaving, I saw her trying to break in, and I figured, you know what? Why not get a drug-addicted fucking rodent and put this bitch in my house? She doesn't belong anywhere else, right?

Like that kind of sucks, but like we weren't exclusive. So like I guess I'll just fucking I'll come back later when you guys are done. And she's like, Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Um, I drugged him. Like a lot of drugs, a lot of drugs, like I'm just waiting for him to be dead to die. And I told him to like run on the treadmill and beat my like high score record, whatever the fuck that means, and I'll let him fuck me in the ass. So we're just kind of waiting for something to happen.

This part is like one of Loki is one of the funniest parts of this book. It is so underappreciated. It's just so well. She drugged him to the point that if he exerted himself, he should die of a heart attack. And they're basically just watching this. Which Chad also tells me she is growing as a person. She knows she can't handle gore, she can't handle blood. So she's like, okay, I gotta still kill people, but I gotta do it in a way that it's not gonna make me throw up a better way.

And I'm a good eye. An eye has left his body. Like he it, I hate it. And then she's like still like gagging, and like this would literally like be me as I I don't like stuff like this.

And she's like goes to have a chat with like Lark and Sloan and talk to them about whatever's happening. And we get the part in Leather and Lark where Lark is taken and they get the call from Lachlan that they're like, something happened. I need you to meet me at the apartment, and they get there and Lachlan Bentley has been hurt, and he's like, Save that fucking dog. Yeah. And Rose looks at Fionn and she's like, I love you. I'm gonna go save your sister. But I gotta go save Lark. I gotta go save Lark. Yeah. And this is the part in like kind of a little refresher. This is the part where um we have like she's been kidnapped, she's put into the batch, the muffin batch ovens, and it's kind of like a little Batman y thing where it's like Abe Midas, a crazy religious nut, tossed her in there and says to Lachlan, You can either save her or you can save your brother and Sloane because I put a bomb on the bottom of their car. So that's fun. Yeah. And he thankfully chooses to save her, and the other ones were fine. It's fine.

And in the scuffle leading to her killing him, she gets basically stabbed with like a pipe, and it's in her like abdomen and liver, fian spiraling, because he's like, you know, I should have told you that I loved her. And she hands him this piece of paper that has this P.O. box in Croatia and is like, if you send me stuff, I will make sure that Rose gets it. Yeah. And I'll keep it safe.

Honestly, this is where Fionn is like such a sweet and gentle baby. Like the last part of this book where he's like writing these is just so Rose is out of the hospital, she's back with the circus, she knows that Fion saved her life. She has a note from him, you know, kind of saying that he cares about her, blah blah blah, but she doesn't know where he is, why he left, when the hell he's gonna get back. He's just gone. Nobody knows what happened to him. And she gets this letter that is addressed to mayhem, her, at uh in Dorothy at the Sylveria Circus in Texas. And it's from a secret admirer, and the address is nowhere without you. Oh, it's just so cute. And pretty much every week he sends her a letter with a tarot card, and he explains what each of those tarot cards means to him, but it's basically their love story.

If you don't want to be here, you don't have to. Like, we're gonna understand. Everyone's gonna really be supportive of that. Like, you're dragging the mood down. Yeah.

She shows up and they like decide to be together, obviously.

And she accepts it, and then she has all of her responses that she has written to him from every card and letter that he has given her. Yes. And like the ending, it's just it's so cute because they like move into Dorothy together, her, which is her trailer, and they just like drive and go on adventures, but they also like stay in Boston because he wants to be near his brothers, and she wants to be near Sloane and Lark, and that's it.

I bet you they're actually like I picture them as like hot garbage, hot glue. There's like oh, I picture what I how I would make them. Yeah. Like just like the snow globe to me was like a mason jar that I had salsa in, like an old salsa jar.
