SPEAKER_00

Welcome, Smut Squad, to another deep dive on Smut Syndicate. I am Charlie.

SPEAKER_01

And I am Danielle. Today we are rounding off the Into Darkness trilogy.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, that is right. We are talking about Game On by Navessa Allen. Now, Game On is a dark rom-com-ish interconnect- ish, right? Yeah. Yeah. Interconnected standalone. This is Missionary Tyler's book. Missionary Tyler is Josh's roommate from Lights Out that turned down Allie. But we may have a redemption of his in this book, but we will speak on that later. A few shout-outs. Tara Langella totally blew me away, Estella. Oh my God. Wow. Where has she been all of my life? I know. I want her to record messages and just send them to me all the time. Like I'll even take death threats from her. And I'll just tell me again, Tara. Like, oh my God. I could listen to her all day and never get tired of her voice. And James Cassidy as our brat Tyler. Wow. Yeah. I was not unhappy about it. I was not, I was not unhappy. Um, spoilers ahead, turn back now at your own peril. Or proceed now at your own peril. You know what? It's your own problem. You've been warned. You've been warned. Whatever the system figure it out on your own, okay? Figure it out on your own. I'm not here for that. Um, so first off, we meet Tyler. He is a gambler. He's running some sort of secret underground gambling ring.

SPEAKER_01

Like which is so wild to me because Missionary Vanilla Tyler as a secret bookie is not the like personality trait I would have given him when we first met him in Lights Out, but go on.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, go on, right? Right? And then we have Stella. She is a tattoo artist. Um, she comes from a very wealthy family, but she doesn't act like she's all that in a bag of chips. Um I think I'm in love with her.

SPEAKER_01

Um it didn't take long for me to be like Stella's my girl. Stella Stella! Stella! Yeah, yeah, not to be dramatic, but I would die for her.

SPEAKER_00

So okay. Well, that's not dramatic at all. That's that's a healthy amount. No, I love it. Um she's the tattoo artist, so she has a tattoo appointment with some guy named Theo. He's a real Jim Bro, annoying type, and it's missionary, Tyler.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he is such a fucking douchebag. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He really is. Yeah, as soon as Tyler sees Stella, we get this thing. Like, this is what makes me get up in the morning. It's when the man sees the female character for the first time, and he's like, whoa, who's that fine piece of ass? Like it's just when the like takes my breath away. Um, sadly, he is going to ruin her, but he doesn't really care because she's not innocent and he's just gonna use her to gain his goals.

SPEAKER_01

And honestly, him describing Stella as the poster child for depressed millennials is probably the only time that Tyler as a character will ever be funny because he's not we'll get there. Um rude. But it is like inner monologue. I've never fucked an emo chick before. Dude. So Tyler is by, he's exclusively been seeing dudes for over six months because he hasn't been in a girl phase, as he calls it. But I have a feeling that still may change that for him. And he's there to get a tattoo, and he's getting like the biggest loser douchebag tattoo of all time. It's a skeleton-holding card, so like every white dude's first tattoo.

SPEAKER_00

But during your appointment, they make out and they get caught by a coworker. And Matt, if this is what's happening in tattoo parlors, maybe I should get a tattoo.

SPEAKER_01

It's not as somebody who gets tattooed almost every month since I was 18 years old. Not once have I ever gotten even remotely close to that.

SPEAKER_00

You're not going to the right parlors.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Okay, so maybe I should change that now. Um, I do have to say though, I love that they're bullying each other to the point of making out, and then she tells him, Don't even think about it too hard. I mean, oh, all my clients, like you're not special. Oh, she is such a punch. Like, this is how all the appointments end up. Yeah. We are also hit with the best line in any book I have ever read in my entire life. In this chapter, she says, Sir, you are a blonde man, calm down. And then I can't explain why that's a burn. It would ruin it. I was dying. Like I was giggling, I was kicking my feet. I was having the best time of my life reading that because yes, it's so funny.

SPEAKER_00

It's so funny. Yeah. And uh sidebar, I was actually discussing this book with a mutual friend of ours, and I was talking about how I had kind of heard like spoilers for these lines and like the blonde guy. And she was like, Are people not into blonde guys anymore? And I was like, Ooh, girl, I gotta break some things to you. I was like, Yeah, it is not very often written. Like for me, I don't write him to look like whatever, because my mind just pictures whatever the hell I want. I don't care. I was like, but there are a lot of people who care. And I was like, Yeah, it's very different. And she's like, What about Aaron Carter and Nick Carter? And I was like, girl, I know we're hurt. And then we went through our list with like Devin Sawa and JTT, and like it was a real uh millennial throwback. We'll just say that. Sounds like it. Yeah, so Stella goes home to her African gray parrot, Amos, which I love.

SPEAKER_01

This also takes me back to like our Meet Cute. So Charlie and I met when we were, I don't know, I think I was 15. Yeah, it was uh minute ago for sure. And we were working at a pet store together, and it was love at first sight. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, pretty much like love at first sight through the parrot cage, and it was just uh so it's really nice to have these thrown into the books. Um I love how Novessa always has a fun, like animal companion in her books, like especially in this series. Yeah, each one of them kind of has their fun. I I just love the animal companion, like that. You put that in a book, five stars. Like agreed. I would just read a book just about animals. So, you know, somebody write that down. Because like a national geographic book or what, okay, I take it back about but I would. But like homeward bound, but in a book, you know. That hurts my feelings. Nothing bad happens. But nothing bad happens. Back to game on. Yes. Um, her brother Blake shows up to her crib. He's frazzled, he's stressed. He admits that he gambled away his inheritance and he lost his grandfather's petite Philippe watch and a total of three million dollars. So I don't know if it was the watch that was the three million or if that was like cash money as well, but he is in deep doo-doo. Yeah. He explains to her what went down and who did it, and she realizes that it was Tyler Theo who sharked her brother. So, not good. Um, turns out Tyler had the brother and her in his plan of trying to get revenge on his pops. His pops abandoned him and his mom Meg, which always makes me think of Hercules, love that name. And basically, because he was abandoned, his like childhood life, whatever, has been hard as fuck since. And he just wants some street justice, not on just Daddy Dearest, but on all the rich assholes of the world. I get that. So I get that. Um Stella's fam is from Old Money, they got some fancy ass real estate business, and Tyler plans to use them to get close to his dad and squeeze the old man. He gets Stella to agree to go for dinner with him, and they're gonna talk about basically how he screwed over her brother. She's always she shows up, she's mad as hell, and Tyler likes what he sees, and he's not gonna let the brother out of the debt, but she can take over the debt, and she's like, Yeah, but I I don't have any money either. And he's like, Well then date me.

SPEAKER_01

Which I love uh date me for convenience, so do I also love it when it is filled with like absolutely toxic hate spewing banter. God damn it, this book it was top tier. They are so mean to each other, and like the name calling and the bullying.

SPEAKER_00

Man, there is something with you about bullying and the bully banter, like being mean is your kryptonite.

SPEAKER_01

Like, it's it's like you and a surprise pregnancy trip. Yes, yeah, it's just it doesn't make sense to us in real life, but when we read about it, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, if that happened to me in real life, I would be committed. But when I see, like even when I look through the list of like ARC books that are coming up or like anything, if it says surprise pregnancy, I'm like, sure. It's like you have 20 books currently on the go. I don't care, I can make room for that one. Like, I I'll read that one first.

SPEAKER_01

How are you surprised by a surprise pregnancy trope if they're telling you there's a surprise pregnancy? I don't know. Because at least if there's bullying, I'm like, yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Because I'm still surprised.

unknown

I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

But also, I have exhausted all of the surprise pregnancy books. Like I did this to myself. So if anybody has any surprise pregnancy books that they think that I should read, just blame on thickness sending me emails, smut syndicate at gmail.com, and just be like, yo, you should read this book. I don't think that there's a pregnancy in it, but I think you would really like the book. Just like leave me a little code word and let me pretend to be surprised. Love it.

SPEAKER_01

Um so he wants her family's old money-rich connections to make new clients for his illegal underground gambling ring, which is wild that this is like his basically his day job.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And nobody knows about it. I mean his best friend. But that's that's okay. Um, so Stella's also telling him her, like basically he's too peasant-y to like fit in with the family's social circle. She's like, look at the way you're like holding your fork and knife, you dirty little peasant. And he's like, say it again. No, but she's like basically giving him a crash course on how to be a pretentious, rich asshole, and like he catches on very quickly. He's a fast learner.

SPEAKER_00

What's that in a man? I love it. And so this whole interaction, she records the whole thing because she's like, I'm gonna go to the cops later on, and I've got proof. And the file is corrupted. Girl, Josh is his roommate, he got the gear. Like so they go to Stella's parents' house for a garden party. This is their first little couple test.

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, so they're there. It's uh after being introduced to Stella's godfather, Richard Lawson. Um, it's also her parents' business partner. He's described as being all almost the same height as Theo, both blonde. And um, at this point, I was like right away, I was like, hmm. Suspicious.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, um, I didn't pick up on Daddy Dick.

SPEAKER_01

As soon as they said, Oh yeah, he's blonde, but like kind of gray now because he's old, I'm like, that's his dad. Yeah, I you can't have two blonde dudes in a book and they're not related.

SPEAKER_00

Where are all these blonde people coming from?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

The one bloodline. You know what? Strangely though, I have had a lot of people, anytime I encounter another redhead where people are like, Oh, do you know that person? I'm like, that person over there at the other side of the store who I'm not interacting with, and they're like, Yeah, but you both kind of have red hair. I'm like, Yeah, perfect.

SPEAKER_01

We're actually first cousins. So he's getting introduced to everybody there. He also meets Stella's mom and dad, and then they get to go and meet the guest of honor for this insanely lavish garden party, and it's Tippi, their family dog.

SPEAKER_00

The whole party is for their dog. This is a good family. This is a good family.

SPEAKER_01

It's honestly a great use of excess money. Yes, 100%. So Tyler Smalltalks, the chef, and all the hired help in the kitchen, and he's trying to get information without kind of selling himself out, but about Stella and her family. And he finally got an inn to ruin Richard's life. And he's on his way to getting closure to stop feeling like he needs to avenge his mother. So he knows that Richard is the problem, that that's his dad. Richard does not know that this miniature version of him, younger, hotter version of him, is his son because he's an idiot.

SPEAKER_00

That 2.0 is his son. Like, come on, guy.

SPEAKER_01

Little Dickie. Um, so he goes to find Stella, she's under the hood of someone's car, just fucking yoinking out wires to like sabotage some rich bitch she don't like.

SPEAKER_00

And I love that. I feel like this book was written for me. Like I and like she's doing a horrible job of it. She's not getting the right shit, but she's like, fuck that girl. Like, she was so mean to me. Let me just quickly fucking wreck some stuff. And he kind of like helps her out.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, he like sneaks up on her and scares her to the point that she like smokes her head off of the hood of the car, is like on her ass on the ground. It's so good. It's so good.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, I love it. Honestly, I love it.

SPEAKER_01

So we get a little bit more of their banter, and like the two of them talking made this entire book. This book could be about literally nothing, and it could just be them conversing, and I would use that shit up. It's she describes what she thinks sex with Tyler would be like as a mediocre wienering, and I literally cry laughed. I was like sitting there with tears in my eyes because that's the funniest shit I have ever heard in my life. I want to say this to strangers on the street. Yeah, you look like you would look like you'd give mediocre wienering. Wiener. It's just much more. Oh, yeah. You want to make a man feel uncomfortable? Tell him that.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so you know, it's later on in the book. Stella goes to the hospital, she's seeing this lady, Ruma. Um sounds like seven years ago, her and a friend left a party. The friend was this Maddie bitch who was driving, she jumped the curb and she hit a person. And instead of helping the person, she called a lawyer and called her family, and they pinned the whole thing on Stella and was like, Yeah, she was driving, she's the one who did this, I wasn't even there. And Stella didn't end up getting charged for it, but it kind of seemed like like she lost a civil suit for it and ended up paying 10 mil. But it kind of sounds like she wanted to lose the civil suit because obviously Ruma had like all these medical bills, like it ended up like ruining her life, and then she wanted to help her.

SPEAKER_01

And it was also like her rich family's big scandal, like they were kind of ostracized from all of these like other birthday birthday parties. Yeah, how am I supposed to invite other people to Tippy's birthday party if they won't even look at us because you scandalized our family? Yeah, but Stella is such an angel, like she comes across as such a cold bitch the entire time, but like deep, deep down, she takes on this person's debt, their medical bills, her brother's inheritance debt that he's done. And like she's not asking anybody for anything. And Ruma tells Stella to like set Maddie and Theo up so that he can scam her. And if not, just Maddie, then like if that's what he wants, if this is what he's trying to get from you, is to like get closer to rich people, to like sewer them, yeah. At least her, at least put him in touch with like the shit bags of your family's social circle.

SPEAKER_00

So that it's totally okay and we don't like let two negatives cross each other out. Like take both these shitty people out, and then we're good to go. Yeah, exactly. In the so they're going to another garden party. Stella's taking Tyler Theo because he is like, they've kind of agreed they're gonna do this whole fake dating thing, but now she's also like, okay, I'm gonna start like sicking him on the shitty people that are in our community. And you know, like tell them which ones are good and tell them, like, yeah, don't do that person, like that person's a nice person or whatever. And he's like really digging into Stella about like crashing into somebody, like, yeah, you're not paying for like you just literally don't give a shit. And she's like, yo, I wasn't the one driving.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, take that, take that.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and that's when he like realizes that Stella has been covering Ruma's medical costs. Like, you dick, your private investigator didn't get everything.

SPEAKER_01

Which, like, quick side note, PIs being like a real thing in real life is actually wild to me. You can just hire someone to like weirdly stalks. I yeah, I don't know, that makes me uncomfortable.

SPEAKER_00

It it's very it is really strange because it's like, how do you get around like the law? Like, how do you I don't know? Also, like how do you get real information? Like, aside from like following someone around and being like, this is their routine, but how do you find out like stuff in their like I don't know? I don't think you do. Oh, okay. You just follow them around. It's just weird.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

If anybody's a private investigator, we would really like to. I got some questions. I don't know what kind of questions we have, but I just just explain your job to me. I just fully don't understand. Smutsyndicate at gmail.com. We would love to hear about it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so Maddie sees Stella at the party and she wants to put on a show. She's like, after everything you did to me and my family, like, but you know what? Like now you're sober, we can talk. Bitch. Bitch. Oh. Yeah, I'd punch, I'd punch her right in the throat. She deserves it. And Tyler throws some of her like closet skeletons in her face. It's like, sounds like there might be some murder in her past, and Maddie takes off, which fuck you. You're out of it.

SPEAKER_01

Which Tyler is like king of the douchebags, but his blackmail game is fucking top tier. Like, he can blackmail anyone into anything, and I feel like that's just really impressive, and he doesn't get enough credit for that. Um Stella wants to fight Tyler. She is fired up, so she like bites him. She literally bites him. Yeah. And I feel like if you're in a physical fight with somebody, I think that's like the equivalent to like an atomic wedgie attack. You're gonna bite someone.

SPEAKER_00

It is very childish, it is something that children do. It's a toddler, it's a toddler move. And this is where they kind of like realize that they want the same thing. They want the high and mighty to be taken down a peg. So they're kind of like, yes, like teamwork makes the dream work.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. Uh so she's telling him that he probably fucks like he's scooting a chair towards a table. Where did she come up with these things? I don't know. Like, I feel like she just like I did she have like a little notebook that every time she thought of like a really witty burn, she like wrote it down. She's like, add that one to the list. Because every time there is like this banter in this book, man, I was killing myself the whole time. I'm like, I gotta write that down. I gotta use that one today. I know.

SPEAKER_00

It was so it makes me want to get into fights with people so that I can use these sick burn. Yes, I know they're so good. Honestly, this is the burn book. Like you could lit just highlight something in every few pages and be like, I'll use this for later this time. Just annotate just for the insults, yeah. 100%. Um, and they go upstairs and they play a game of poker with all the richy riches, and he's like reeling in the big fishes for his underground poker game. Um, they end up meeting AJ, which is one of Stella's uh friends, old fuck buddies, and they have a little threesome. And I guess missionary Tyler isn't as missionary as we once thought.

SPEAKER_01

I am willing to admit when I am wrong, and I have never been more wrong in my life.

SPEAKER_00

Man, I the stuff with Tyler, I and we talked about this. We talked about this for two books. We said, how is she gonna make Tyler cool? How like how? How are you gonna redeem him? And she did a we're gonna share him with another dude. Yeah. That's how we're gonna do it. She she did it. Um so we get a little bit of insight into Tyler. So when Tyler he's visiting Josh and Allie, we find out that when Allie asked him about mask play, he recognized the photo and the tattoos as being Josh. Tattoos. So we initially thought that Tyler was just a frickin' idiot. No, he actually was playing all of us. Like he totally had us all of us.

SPEAKER_01

And which he had hoped so cute that he would play much. That's my best friend. And I'm not gonna call him out because I know he'll spiral. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then I'll just hook him up with my ex-girlfriend. Well, and because he him and Allie had kind of like fizzled. He was like, Yeah, it was good while it lasted, but like I'm not super interested in her. And also, like, we haven't had anything for months. He had kind of recognized that like when Allie would come around, Josh was all like, mmm, what's that little honey bunny over there? And he was hoping that they would hook up. Like, number one, to kind of take Josh off of his back a little bit because it was always harassing him, like, where are you going? What are you doing? What are you? And like kind of knew he had a girlfriend, but also because he was like, those people are the same and they're weird, and they should go be weird together. And you know what? Yes, yes. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

I love this little side story. Like it just shows what kind of person Tyler really is. Yes. And it it takes like one douchebag point away from him at this point. Yeah, okay. Good.

SPEAKER_00

We're going in the good direction. We're going in the right direction. And you know what? I love that. Um, they're at another event, and Maddie is back. She's showing her stupid face, even though Theo Tyler warned her not to show her face again.

SPEAKER_01

I love that this party is like a weird prehistoric themed party.

SPEAKER_00

Rich people are fucking weird. I love it, but also start inviting us to these things.

SPEAKER_01

We're not rich, but we can party. But we can party.

SPEAKER_00

We also don't drink, but we can party. We can party. We'll just if you just need more people, I'll brush my hair that day, okay? Come on, just invite us to be extras. Yeah, we'll be just background people that are like, no, this is a great party. Like, we'll just we'll pump it up. We're here to pump it up, okay? Um, she like Stella calls her out for all this shit that she's been doing her whole life. She basically everything that she should have been saying to her for the last seven years, she says it, and then Maddie fucking bitch slaps her.

SPEAKER_01

Like Maddie is such a crybaby bitch. Stella having enough willpower to not drop kick this hoe in the fucking head is so impressive. Stella admits that she doesn't have a car or a license, she won't drive, and it's all because of that night. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Which it's really sad because then Stella, okay, number one, Stella's also 5'11. She could drop this girl like a sack of potatoes if she wanted to. So fuck you, Maddie. Um, but this also causes like Stella and Tyler to kind of unravel and have a little fight, which is not I don't like it. It makes sense. I don't know if I'd call it a little fight.

SPEAKER_01

They're in a car and they blow the fuck up. He screams at her and she yeets herself out of the car.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, okay, okay. It's not a little fight. Um, he basically tells her that the reason why he's such a bitch to everyone is because of how the world treated him and his mom.

SPEAKER_01

Which okay, I always feel bad for guys with like legit mama issues. Um, he hated how his mom was treated and then became the exact type of person that treated his mom like shit. Which is really fucking sad, but I think that kind of turned his thoughts inwards a little because after they recover from their blow up, he calls off the debt completely.

SPEAKER_00

Which you know what? I really like that. Like me too. Some inner reflection. Yeah, he goes to Stella's apartment and uh Tyler has a degradation case. Yeah. And that tracks. He does. Yeah. And we get, I don't know if she did this on purpose because you did not pick up on this. So I don't know if I'm just trying to see things that aren't there. But we get an Austin Powers joke, and that just skyrocketed this book up to one of my favorites because come on, yeah, that's top-tier comedy, but I totally it totally slipped for me.

SPEAKER_01

I actually had to get you to explain to me what the joke was before we started recording today. Because I was like, where is it?

SPEAKER_00

Because it actually drove me crazy. He's giving her a back massage and they're talking, and he's saying something to her that's I I can't even remember the exact wording because I just laughed so hard. But it's like, yeah, how does that feel? And she's like lower, and you go, How does that feel? And that I don't know if she did on purpose. I don't know if it was like something in her subconscious where she didn't realize that she put in an Austin Power stroke. The first chance that I get to ask her if she ever chats with us, that is my opening. Was that on purpose? Did you put is is that on purpose? Because like I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

It just like it really solidifies the fact that Tyler and Josh are best friends because that is so fucking Josh coded. And we get like a little bit of like, okay, you know how friends, when they spend so much time together, they kind of like mold into the world.

SPEAKER_00

That is what happened there. I love it. And I listened to this. So having James Cassidy do that little void, like, ooh, it worked, it worked. It was so fun. I loved it. So 10 out of 10. Um, we finally get some P in the V action. Oh god. Tyler Grimms King. Yeah, he's giving her the onions, man. And the sex is so good that it has him rethinking all of his evil plans. Like, what? Uh your like lifelong commitment. You just literally Your lifelong revenge. Your lifelong commitment to revenge. First time, first time in there. And you're like, do I really need to? Like he got that post nut clarity and it hit him hard. Some men just fall asleep. Tyler, he's rethinking his life. His entire life. Everything. Everything, like, because his mother has died like nine or ten years prior to this. Yes. We're talking about a decade-long revenge plot. Yeah. First time in. How long did this last? 20 minutes, maybe. And you're like, what have I been doing? You know what? I think I gotta do something different.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. The next morning they wake up. Amos is copying Stella's sex noises. I just love it so much. I love birds. I love African grays. That shit is so funny. Oh, it's so funny. Tyler's leaving.

SPEAKER_00

We know that they like perfectly mimic the sound too. Like they just pick weird shit and that's what they go with.

SPEAKER_01

And it's it'll be the most random thing. They'll hear it once, and that's their whole personality for the next year.

SPEAKER_00

Love it.

SPEAKER_01

Tyler's leaving, and he tells her, like, text me when you realize you can't live without me. And that is such a blonde man thing to say.

SPEAKER_00

And this fucking dickhead, the night before, before he leaves, he had written fuck you in his little man butter on her back. And so why? Man butter? Yeah. Yeah. It felt right. It felt right. It felt like you were gonna like that. Uh yeah, I did. And so she like gets a black light and fucking checks it out and is like, fuck you. And she like texts him and he's like, wow, I didn't even think that it would take you that long to like text me back. And he did it so that she would need to call him again, if only to punish him. Brat. Barrat. Brah. Yeah. And we go and see like Ruma. The only complaint that I have in this book is that this is our last time seeing Ruma. And I don't know why I was like super drawn to her for whatever weird reason. And I just want more. I just want to know what happens with her. But she kind of like fills her in on everything that's been happening. And because this is kind of like Stella's like bestie, really, is like, you know, she is like a very closed off, like, you know, her whole world crumbled when all this shit happened to Ruma. And so I don't know. I just I want to know more. They trauma bonded her. Yes. And I trauma bonded with them. And I want I'm just, I need more. I need more. Um, Blake calls her and he's like, I need you put on a dress and meet me somewhere. And let me tell you, if one of my brothers ever called me, I'd be like, lose this fucking number. Meet me somewhere, I would block them. I'd be like, for sure, meet me outside, and if I don't show up, just wait a little bit longer. I'm running behind, and then I would block that number and I would drop kick my phone off a bridge. But 100% She's a good sister, so she shows up. He takes her to the super secret party that's being thrown by Tyler, and it's in a cave. This cave that's a big thing.

SPEAKER_01

They have to climb down into a sewer through a manhole. A sewer party.

SPEAKER_00

Girl, this is teenage manager turtles. I really go. Well, also, this is in the States where they have rats. Like Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. I don't like that. But we'll pretend like there aren't any rats. And he transformed this space into something incredible. It's all like Gatsby-esque, old Hollywood. Yeah, that's basic, actually. She's like going around the party with her brother, and they're realizing she like runs into this family friend, Keith, and she's like, Whoa, there's a lot of people that I know that are here. And these are not like the richy rich people. These are like the people that just like work for my family. Like, these are like accountants, these are staff.

SPEAKER_01

Like, um the help is here.

SPEAKER_00

Whoa. Like, why are these people here? And she's kind of also like, um, bro, I thought we were gonna take down like the shitty people. These are nice people. Like, what the hell?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but Blake has been watching Theo at all of the parties that Blake saw. Theo sneaks off every chance he had to like snoop for information on their family.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And he uses this chance to call the cops to bust Theo Tyler. And he's not sure of his plans, but he knows that he plans to hurt their family and friends.

SPEAKER_01

So yeah. Of course, like perfect timing. Theo Tyler shows up and he's like, no, no, you are not about to ruin my plan. Still fucking pepper sprays him and his guards, which is like hell yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Also, in closed space? She's doing this in the sewer. In a sewer girl. You just pepper sprayed everybody. That's bad. That is bad. Like, I've been in enclosed spaces when there's pepper spray going off. I've seen people abandon their children because they thought that there was toxins in the air. Like, it is not good. Um, but the cops bust up the tunnel, shit hits the fan, Dio Tyler grabs Stella and he's like helping her get through a side tunnel. Okay, wait. Helping is a big word. He forces her with a gun. Um, so he's politely asking her to go, and he's like, Deo Strickland isn't even my real name. Like, I'm the lizard king.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, what the fuck? Like, okay.

SPEAKER_00

I'd be like, Yeah, he's big mad. Like, so he's having a mini spiral because he was like planning this whole thing, but he was gonna keep like Stella and her, like Stella and her family were he was realizing like they were actually good people, to throwing birthday parties for dogs, they're giving him a change of heart. And Stella's like, okay, but why are like all of my family's employees here? And he's like, but they are bad. They're cheaters, there's elder abuse. There's like one woman who was actually planning to kill her husband. So it's like, yeah, kind of they are. And Stella's like, fair enough, you're him, aren't you? And he's like, him who? And he's like, Richard's son. And he's like, uh, maybe. Uh I just told you my name isn't uh Theo Strickland, girl. Like, we're just throwing out all these secrets. And she's like, Yeah, I remember when I was a kid, Richard was like really sad about a son and he couldn't find him. He's like, shut up. You're not telling the truth. You know what? I'm gonna take us to someone who knows the truth.

SPEAKER_01

Like, nothing like getting your shit absolutely rocked with some hard truths about people that you think you know for both of them, and then being like, get in the car, going for a trip.

SPEAKER_00

We're going on a ride. I'd be like, I don't want to go on a ride with you. So he basically kidnaps her, he helps her into a car. Um, she looks in the in the glove box, and his real name is Tyler Newman.

SPEAKER_01

He would be a fucking Tyler Newman. Newman. Newman is such a blonde guy name. It's such a back seat full of snacks, blonde guy name.

SPEAKER_00

Oh Tyler, change your name. Tyler Newman. Like Newman. You know what? Actually, I think I've known like three or four Tyler's and they've all been blonde. So you know what?

SPEAKER_01

I think it's like a rule. If you're having a baby and the baby is blonde when it's born, they're like, here's your list of names to choose from. Tyler's at the top, so people always pick it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Tyler, Chad, Josh, Kyle. Yeah, right? Yeah. Checks out, checks out. Yeah. So basically they talk about his childhood, and he's like, My mom worked two jobs. She worked two jobs and never stopped. Um, they didn't have any money. The mom got cancer at 35. 35. She died at 35. Why are you doing this to me? Died. I don't want to die. Why couldn't you tell me that his mom was 95? Just lie to me. I can't say nine years.

SPEAKER_01

Then he wouldn't have a nine-year villain arc to give up after one time having sex.

SPEAKER_00

First time P and the V. Um, yeah, that kind of freaked me out. I was like, bitch, and nobody would help him bury his mom. So the state took her body and cremated her, which is Fuck that sad. It hurts you.

SPEAKER_01

So sad. Yeah. When he said he talked about her wanting to be buried.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, right. And so when he finally got enough money, he bought her a plot, a headstone, and then he like kind of said, like, fuck you to the family. Because it sounded like the family that she came from had a little bit of coin, and they were like, Yeah, we don't care. Like, fuck her, she's not a problem. Like, they sound real fucking dirtbag. Um, and so he's like, Okay, fine, but then you don't get to visit her. Like, you didn't care then, you don't get to care now. Valid. Yeah, so his like revenge arc feels very justified now. It really does, it really does. And so Tyler's taking Stella to see Jenna, his aunt. She's the only one who is in contact with the mom and confirms his side of the story that his dad was the deadbeat.

SPEAKER_01

Jenna sounds like absolute trash. She's like rocking a blunt in her saggy moo moo on her wraparound porch on like a dirt field. And she is big mad that she her first thing is like, where is she? And he's like, I'm not telling you. She just wants to know where her sister is. And Tyler's like, fuck you, Aunt Jenna. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I know that Nevessa is really fucking smart. So I feel like she does these things on purpose.

SPEAKER_01

Like, I know for the idiots like us to be like, how many times can we make a stupid reference while reading this? Right?

SPEAKER_00

Are they picking up on the Austin Power references? Are they picking up on the Forest Gump references? The answer is yes, we are. So if you're not writing them, just lie to my face and tell me that you did it on purpose. Exactly. So it turns out that big Richard Dick dad, he ain't a dick, even though he is a dick, because Dick is short for Richard. Hey! That's why I've been calling him Dick. Oh, is it? Well, that's I! In case if you didn't know, I'm teaching things. Um it turns out the mom wanted him to grow up without money and basically just let them both suffer to prove a point. Sounds stupid, but also I would do this. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Oh man, that's sad. Like Tyler is spiraling. His entire vengeance plot was for nothing. Everything that he has put anything into was for nothing. He has been lied to his entire life.

SPEAKER_00

Well, and especially like, you know, they don't really say this necessarily about the mom. Like, I'm just assuming. But I imagine that if she like moved out here, her own family is not helping her. Richard wasn't helping her. She's raising the son. She probably doesn't say the nicest shit when she's talking about people with money. Like she mad suffered, you know? Like, man, two jobs for your whole life, man. You want to hang with me? If I'm working two jobs, I'm gonna be a fucking bitch to everyone.

SPEAKER_01

And your son is blonde. Oh my god. Like, just can't catch up free. I like blonde people.

SPEAKER_00

But also, I'd be like, where'd that child come from? Like, I got red hair. What's going on here?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, like, you know, so I'm like, man, that's where he got a lot of this fucking rage from. Aunt Jenna, she leaves the house, she hops in her minivan, and she's about to go down the road. But of course, this fucking idiot, she doesn't know how to drive, so she like clips. She's probably drunk. Right. She's been smoking a blunt on the porch for the last hour. Yeah, she's just rocking it. And Stella gets knocked down, she's unconscious. Tyler is freaking out because she's gonna die. And it's like, um, yeah. Like y'all should have. She just got hit by a van. And you kidnapped her. So, like, if she dies, like all of this shit is your fault.

SPEAKER_01

Like, you're gonna rubble. He calls Josh. He needs Nurse Allie. She's like, call 911, you fucking idiot. What do you want me to do? He's like, okay, hangs up, calls an ambulance, and then calls Allie back. He's like, hi, okay, meet again. Now I need some instruction. And she's just like keeping him calm and like walking him through, like, okay, keep our airway open, wait for an ambulance to get there, which I actually love. I love that we get a little bit of nurse Allie. Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

That's what I was gonna say. Like, sidebar. I love when we have kind of the completed series of these interconnected standalones, and then everybody's there. That's my jam. Like that, man. When I'm like, I know that character, I read them in a book. That long lost friends. Yes. We're all together again, yeah. I know. It feels good when the whole gang is back. I love it. So when Allie comes to, she is freaking the fuck out because she realizes she got hit by a car. And this is her, this is her thing. This is her trigger. Like, obviously, her life was kind of ruined by everything that Ruma went through. Also, like she doesn't drive, she does, you know, and and you also were just unconscious, and now you're like, hey, and Tyler, like, is like, you know what? I think I love Stella. I think I want to be with her.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. There's nothing quite like the person you hate or think you hate getting hit by a car and almost dying to be like, yeah, you know, I changed my mind.

SPEAKER_00

Especially by your aunt when you kidnapped her and brought her to this separate location.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. This is, you know what? Good on them. Good on them. I know. They go home, everything's fine. She gets checked out, whatever. She's got a concussion. Tyler knows that an apology is not gonna come. Yes. So he offers himself up to be punished. My guy. Yes. Like, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I would just go straight to like beating the shit out of him. There would be nothing sexual but I'd be like one-two punching him in the head. You got me hit by a car.

SPEAKER_00

Also, she's 5'11. This is a big bitch.

SPEAKER_01

Like, she could rock your shit. And he he realizes he's like super into this and finally admits to himself, like, yeah, I am a brat. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

They like they have like a full-on, like 50 shades moment, except Stella's the Christian gray. Like, yeah, get a girl.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

We even get like a a little miss Stella, put your hands on the headboard, McCormick. Yeah. And I was like, holy shit, Novessa. Yeah. Yeah. What are you writing? I know. I was like, I didn't know what to keep reading.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, it's fabulous. Give me 14 of them. Like, but Novessa, where were you hiding this? Like, I know that shit was like crazy. It lights out. And maybe it's because, like, we came from reading, like haunting and hunting ad a lot. Like, we've kind of we've seen, we've seen storage locations for your knife. Like weapons. I know how you can store it.

SPEAKER_01

I've seen stocking. I've seen the story. We've done stocking and we've done the weapon storage. We have not done no a madam?

SPEAKER_00

Not in a minute, I haven't. No, not in a minute. It worked for me. It yeah, it really. Chef's kiss. Um, he tells Stella that his plan was like to blackmail everyone, and basically that each person he was going to like blackmail of like her family's employees or whatever. He was going to get their help dismantling the fam and dick's company one brick at a time. And this is why you should always. Investigate before you fucking freak out. Because totally has I've had a few of these moments where not this, but you know, have you? Not this, but where you kind of like you ever go to a store and you like freak out because they don't have something in, and then you realize this wasn't the store that you thought was selling it, and you just have to like buying milk at the hardware store. Totally been there. You're like, I swear you guys sold this milk here before, and they're like, please no. And then you realize what's going on, and you're like, Why was I talking loud? I shouldn't go away. This is not for me. Um, but Stella still wants some of these assholes to pay. Like, yeah, death by a thousand paper cuts. Yeah, which dark. Um, they go to see his mama in the cemetery, and then he like asks her, can you take me to see Richard? Richard lives in a modest neighborhood, nice but simple. And when they open up the door, Richard admits that when they first met, he wanted to ask Tyler who he was. He is so excited to realize that Tyler is his son, and he wants to see the mom too. Tyler then has to fucking break it to him that she died nine years ago, and Dick basically starts crying. Which, like, he was not a dick, he was a nice guy.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Turns out Dick met Mama Meg when he was still married, but the relationship was over, but he had to file the paperwork. There was an age gap, but she was an old soul, which I hate that fucking line. Kind of creeps me out, but whatever, we'll let it go. Um, when she found out that she was pregnant, Dick didn't take it the best way. He asked for a few days' time, but in those days, he like realized right away that he was like, you know, I've been making her wait long enough. Like, I want to be with this girl, and he's like, I gotta get my shit together. So he bought a house, which is a house that he's currently still living in, because it was in a street that she liked. He got an engagement ring, and then he called her. But by the time that he called her, she was gone, number change, and apartment empty.

SPEAKER_01

It took four days for her to be like, I'm not waiting. Yeah, she in four days bought her a house and a fucking engagement ring, and she was like, I'm never waiting on a man.

SPEAKER_00

Right? What the fuck? Yeah, it that's the thing, is I think that old mama Meg had uh I think she had a little bit of a she was the problem. Yeah, I think she had a little bit of rage on herself too. I totally understand because she got into a relationship with an older man and he's giving her the same story. Like, the relationship's over. We just haven't filed, it's been over for a long time. Like, you know, uh I understand where she's coming from. And she's also like, man, I came to the city because when she did start dating Dick, the only people that were nice to her were Stella's parents. Everyone else was like, Who's this piece of garbage that's at our dog's birthday party? This is not for you, this is for other dogs. Like, exactly, you know, so she the little bit of the world that she saw, it was a piece of shit. And she was like, Let me go back to Aunt Jenna's farm and work my two jobs and raise my son, and we'll see what happens here. And you know, so I I do get it. It's like, girl, if you waited one more day, but also, man, is that not the dream when somebody, you know, like instead of like calling the guy a million times for just to like dip, like, ooh, I've read some of those stories, I'm sure they're not even true. But where the girl's like, yeah, I caught him cheating, and then I just like left the apartment. I just disappeared, I moved to another city, and then he's never seen me again. And it's like, damn, that feels good. Like, yeah. So it's like, get it, Meg. Um, Dick wanted to know why she left, and Tyler could have chosen this time to be like, Yeah, it was your fault, and you ruined our lives, and you're a complete piece of shit. But instead, he chose kindness and he tells him, No, it wasn't your fault, like it wasn't all you. She just wanted me to grow up in a normal childhood, and you know, like she continued waitressing, she never got over you, and Dick admits like that's why he doesn't date, and he was like hoping that they would find him. Like he's been waiting, like, damn, it hurt me. Uh, I like honestly, I cried at this, but I cried everything, so I don't Did you cry at this?

SPEAKER_01

No, I actually this was like one of my biggest like dislikes, and it wasn't even like I disliked it. I just thought that it was like kind of unrealistic. This guy is a fucking, I'm gonna assume, millionaire if he is in the same social circles as Stella's family. You're telling me you couldn't find the resources to track down this chick that you fucking knocked up. Maybe unlike. Well, I you're having birthday parties for dogs, okay? You could throw a few bucks in a savings account and you could have made it happen.

SPEAKER_00

Take it out of the dog birthday party fund and put it into the finding the lost son fund. Yeah. Yes. I feel like his priorities weren't in the right place. I you know what? I loved it and I felt like she just totally wrapped it up perfectly well for me. I'm a simple gal and I can take a simple explanation. And she was like, he never asked Meg where she was from, which, yeah, checks out. Like, okay, I've met men. That's how, yeah, they could date someone for six months, have a baby with them, and be like, so what was your name again? Like, so I'm like, I don't know. And the states are big, and it's just, you know, if you move like a few states over, I don't know. Like, where would you even start? You know, I'm I'm gonna be.

SPEAKER_01

So for him to have the resource, he knows who he knew everyone was just like in their own world. Mom was like own fucking skull. Tyler's like, I'm gonna avenge her, and the dad's like, maybe they'll show back up.

SPEAKER_00

Like, no, you guys are all stupid. We're just in our own circle with this, okay? Screw you. I'm happy with it. I liked it. Um, they then kind of like start working on a little friendship, and they're like asking all these questions, and like he just wants to know everything about his son, and it just makes me so happy.

SPEAKER_01

It is pretty sweet though, like that. Tyler chose to like not be a dick give Dick the dick version. Yeah, I did, I did really like that. I thought that was sweet.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he didn't want to give Dick the dick. Um, once I get back to town, because now no more kidnap, we're good. They have decided they're gonna like eat the rich one by one, the ones who deserve it. Um, and we find out that like officials are looking into a death while on vacation, which it sounds like Maddie was responsible for. So she's gonna get her street justice. She might not get the justice for hurting Gruma, but she's still gonna go down. So she's gonna go to jail. Yeah. Fuck you, Maddie. And it's gonna wreck her family, and that just makes me happy. That also makes me happy too. And then that's it. Then that's the book. Like it we do get so we get a few epilogues. Um, they're all so fun. Oh, they and we're gonna briefly talk about them, but we're not gonna ruin them for you because these are something that you should enjoy. And as always, do not rob yourself the joy of reading or listening to these books because there is so much more than what we are saying, like we are totally grazing over. Um, we give you like our short and silly whatever version. Um, so that if you want to read it or you feel like you're missing anything, go back and read it. Um, but the first epilogue is we have the whole crew is meeting up, and this again, this is my jam. Like Josh and Allie are there, Junior and Lauren are there, and all of their friends, and it's like a cute full circle moment. Um, I wish that they would have gone a little bit deeper with it, and but I'm like, I like it that we at least have like a nice round ending. I really want maybe she'll write us a little baby novella about all of the characters. Just a little bit. I feel like that would be so fun. Just a little tinty baby novella.

SPEAKER_01

Because it was, it was such a good ending to this series that like the three couples getting together at their family dinner, and it's like a weird, unhinged, they're all kind of like polar opposites kind of gang. And I have never wanted to be a part of a friend circle so badly in my life.

SPEAKER_00

I know. I want someone who does like fan art or something to like draw this, like, you know, Fast and the Furious little Ben Diesel family dinner kind of thing. Cause I I honestly I loved it. Like, we got this from the Ruinous Love trilogy, and I really love when authors do this to us, where they're like, these are all the characters that were in this series, they're now all friends with each other, which is really nice too, because all of these characters kind of on their own, aside from like pretty much Lauren and Junior, and Junior because he had a you know, he's got like a little bit of a bigger family, and Lauren because she had like friends from her club, but pretty much everyone else was like a loner, so it's nice to see them having like both girlfriends and guy friends. Like it's really nice. Um, we finally get the like because I need this in all of my books. Stella tells Tyler that she loves him, he loves her back, and they like agree to like they end up asking like AJ to join their relationship, to which he agrees, and I really love I actually love this.

SPEAKER_01

I feel like this is the first time that I've ever read like a happy little threpple ending. Yes, yes, and come on, well it was pretty fucking cute.

SPEAKER_00

It was really cute, and honestly, like she didn't overdo it. Like AJ is a very side character throughout this. Like he just kind of pops in for a couple of chapters, and then he's just kind of like, see you guys later, and then he pops back in. And and it's it's really cute to to see that. Like she I didn't expect it at all. Like, I I have no idea.

SPEAKER_01

Especially when he like rolls up for family dinner, and like there's no pressure being like, Oh, this is our second boyfriend. It's just this is AJ. Yeah, and everybody's like, Cool, what up? Like, yeah, welcome to the club. Grab a seat. We all fam. Yeah, I fucking love it.

SPEAKER_00

It's so good. It's so good, it's so good. Honestly, I really love that she did that. Um, so then we also get she put in the epilogs from the other books. So we get Fred's POV, um, that's the kitty cat in lights out. And this is um, I thought, yeah, this is like a POV from the first time that he meets Josh. And Fred is fucking hilarious. His inner monologue as the cat, love it. So good. We get a little bit of an epilogue of Tyler the Bookie, which again, shocker, man. Like, he's a bad boy, he's a blonde boy. And then we get AJ and the whole like thruple in the smex club. Love it. It's it's so good, and then that's the end.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And I really, really, really want a novella of all of the characters. Yes. Like, I don't know what they would be doing. I don't know. I don't know what kind of thing. But that's not for me to figure out. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

It's for Novessa to figure out.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, Novessa. Like, I don't know. Maybe they're having Christmas together. Maybe this is just like a routine Sunday. Like, maybe they're literally just sitting there talking to each other. I just want it. Just I don't even need like an actual book. Just write some point form things on a natural.

SPEAKER_01

Just give me a little hangout idea.

SPEAKER_00

Just send it into the wind and I'll catch it. Like, come on, girl. I just I need it. But honestly, I really liked it. I liked it too. I thought that it was a really good book. It this Lights Out is such a crazy book to follow up on. Like that book came out of nowhere. And with this whole entire series, she did something that you don't see in a lot of like trilogies. Each book was different. Like the couples were so different in them. Like she wrote such different scenarios and relationships and personalities for each one of these three books, which you don't see that a lot. Normally, just like book two and three are just like carbon copies kind of of the other books, and they just add in different jokes or kind of like change it, which that's great too. I love that as well. But it she really knocked it out with this one for me, at least, anyways.

SPEAKER_01

I really, I agree with that. Yeah, I thought that this, I thought this was probably, dare I say, my favorite in the series. Well, I love Lights Out. But this book was I really liked it.

SPEAKER_00

That Austin Powers joke, man. I'm telling you.

SPEAKER_01

That was the I think it's Stella. I think she is just because I I love you, Nevessa, but I fucking hate Allie. I can't oh yeah. Dang you're telling me that's no, you know, I'm not even gonna get into it.

SPEAKER_00

I love Stella, and I think that that's why she's like your dream, your dream gal. I do I I love banter like that for me. Banter, oh my god, you this book has it. It has it, it has it in spades, like they did such a good job with the banter in this one, and it's also it's really hard because lights out, lights out is incredible. Jacob Morgan as Josh kills it. Like anytime that I listen to Jacob Morgan as like he just adds in, like, I think he must be a funny guy because he adds in a humor, and humor is my kryptonite. So I don't know. I I'm gonna say it's tied with lights out. That's fair. Because it's it's so hard to like pick one or the other because like lights out was the first, so is my first love, you know. Um, but yeah, it was honestly a fabulous book. Give me 14 of them.

SPEAKER_01

Give me 14 of them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Well, thank you guys so much for listening. Let us know. Did you read this book? Where did you rate it? Um, you know, and can you help me harass Novessa Allen into giving us a novella about these characters having another family dinner? Please. I can't do it alone. I cannot be the only one who wants this. No, I'm just joking. Don't harass her. Just politely ask her every single day until she does it. Encourage her. Encourage her. If she hears that it's not just me who wants it, she might do it. Maybe she already has it. Maybe she has notes. Maybe it's just sitting there on a computer and she just wants to send it to me. But also, Novessa, reach out. Let me know. I have so many questions. So, so many questions. Um, if you guys want to see what we're up to and posting every day, you can find us on Instagram, we're on TikTok, we're on Facebook, we're on threads, we're on YouTube. We are on everything.
